Advice for Those with a Mental Health Condition

I guess you can say that I’m a high-functioning person with a psychological disorder. Although I’m quite different from other people, I somehow manage to live my life and continue to do so despite the difficulties: I work, go outside, and have normal conversations. It’s not always easy or consistent, but I’m able to function well enough. This, however, doesn’t make me any greater or lesser than those ‘like’ me. Each case is unique. We may or may not have the same symptoms and experiences. Still, we all remain equal with everyone else–worthy of love, understanding, and respect. If you’re here right now because you can relate, I’ve written a few words to hopefully encourage you.

Embrace Every Part of You

Acceptance sets you free. Once you’re at peace with yourself, nothing can tear you down no matter what disadvantages you have. Know that you’re not alone and all your traits make you the beautiful, one-of-a-kind person that you are.

Don’t Let Your Condition Define You

Countless people with disabilities have proven how powerful this is–in sports, music, business, and life in general. If it’s not beyond your abilities, you can do it. Try before you dismiss. You’re capable of doing things you may not be aware of yet.

Recognize the Good

It’s hard to stay positive when your mind is against you. It’s a constant battle between us and our voices. Nonetheless, we must keep shifting our attention to what builds us up instead of focusing on what’s wrong. For instance, having a supportive family is worth appreciating. Some have no choice but to keep going alone. Be occupied with the things you love.

Inspire Others

Anyone, with or without a condition, can get motivated by seeing you live your best life. Maybe your story will lift the spirits of those who are going through the same struggle. Maybe your online posts will educate those who don’t understand. Not only are you helping others, you’re also helping yourself by giving your heart a sense of fulfillment.

Remember That You’re Always Enough

Even if all you can do is breathe, that’s more than okay. You’re a significant individual and you’re very important to your loved ones. That will never change. No one else can take your place. When you’re tempted to believe otherwise, don’t give in. Not every thought deserves your attention. Bury harmful words with true, loving ones.

I hope you never forget to love yourself. That’s the only way to survive and to thrive. You are your own hero. Your villains, whether they are invisible or not, can’t beat you if you’re determined to win. Moreover, surround yourself with people who care for you. They will hold your hand when you feel alone. They will not let you listen to the lie that you’re a burden because you’re not. You are precious. I may not know you, but I promise that I’ll do my best to stay strong if you make the same promise. Let’s keep breathing and make the most out of the life we have.
